Split results

A split is the section of the race between two timing points. Split results rank participants by the time they took to cover that section. A hill climb ranking is an example of this type of results.

Split results are very useful, for example, in a triathlon, where you want to reward the fastest participant in each discipline: swim, bike and run.

In our example we want a ranking of the participants who take the least time between 10K and 15K. To get a ranking between two specific timing points, you need to set up a split between them.

To create the split, open the race setup and, in the event, expand the Splits section. Add a split and use the slider to set the start timing point (10K) and the end timing point (15K) (From the timing point / To the timing point). All the fields are explained in Splits configuration.

Once the split is created, Copernico takes the passing time at 15K and subtracts the passing time at 10K. This gives the time each participant took to cover the split and all its rankings: overall, by gender, by category, by attribute and by team, with official time and with net time. In each participant's profile (side panel of Participants), you can see the time, average and overall, category and gender positions for each split.

The rankings that are published are configured in the Rankings tab of the race setup. In Auto mode they are generated from the event splits; in custom mode you can choose which splits to include, by name (Select specific splits) or by type (Select splits by type). More information in Rankings Settings — Help Guide.

All this information can be used in presets, documents and awards for the split results.

If you do not need a complete results document for the split, it is best to create an award for it. In the race setup, in the event awards section (Awards), add an award, give it a name (Name; it can be the same as the split name) and choose the split in the Split field; in our example, the split we called “Buff Split”. In our example we want awards for that split by gender (Type of award: Gender): the first 3 men and the first 3 women (Amount: 3). All the fields are explained in Trophies.

Once the split and the awards are created, you can view them in the Copernico awards widget, in the app and in any document with associated awards.

With presets and documents you can create more complete documents; for example, a preset sorted by the split position that also shows the total race time. See Creating presets.

⚠️ Important: Copernico does not check whether participants have finished the race to include them in split results. For example, in a race with an award for a mountain pass climb, the ranking is updated as runners reach the top of the mountain pass, so you know who did the split fastest before they reach the finish line. But if the participant with the best split time does not reach the finish line and you do not change their status to withdrawn, they keep the best split time. Before the award ceremony, change to Withdrawn the status of the participants you know for sure are no longer running (see Athlete status). When nobody is left in the race, you can also end the event: Copernico marks every participant still running as withdrawn and shows a summary.
