Race readings (raws)

Raws are all the readings sent by a tag to each timing point during the race. In Copernico all of them are recorded, but only one, the one that applies according to the timing point configuration, is shown as the participant's time at that timing point.

You can consult statistical data about the race readings on the Raws page in the main menu. This article explains that page, the bulk operations you can perform on readings and how to view a participant's readings.

1. Raws page

At the top, filter the readings by Hours range (based on Raw time, Original time or Creation time), by event and by location (one or more). Below, the slider limits the query by time, from the First raw to the Last raw, and marks the start time of each wave in the race.

The table shows detailed statistics for each timing device, with one row per device and location:

  • Total raws: total readings collected by the timing device.
  • Disabled: readings disabled by the timer, which do not count towards times.
  • Unique tags assigned: read tags that belong to a participant.
  • Unique tags unassigned: read tags that belong to no participant.
  • Import and Rewind: readings received through a file import or a rewind.
  • ∆ Min.: the lowest processing time for a given device + location pair (the reading that reached Copernico fastest).
  • ∆ Average: the average processing time for a given device + location pair.
  • ∆ Max.: the highest processing time for a given device + location pair (the reading that took longest to arrive).
  • Offsets: offset applied to the readings in the range.

Raw creation: the moment (timestamp) at which the reading was created on the device.

Raw process: the moment (timestamp) at which the reading was processed by the software (online).

The difference formula ∆ is PROCESS_TIME = RAW_PROCESS – RAW_CREATION.

Expand a row to View Participants and the unassigned tags in and out of the sequencing range (see Assigning tags to participants).

From the right-hand sidebar you can also import readings from a file with the Raws Importer (see Sending readings to Copernico).

2. Operations on readings

Select one or more rows in the table and click the gear icon Operations on readings in the right-hand sidebar. The panel shows how many readings will be affected. Select the operations you want to perform (you can combine several) and click Apply:

  • I want to change the readings' offset: applies a positive or negative time offset to the selected readings; that is, it adds or subtracts time from the selected range. It is used to fix the desynchronisation of a timing device. The offset replaces any offset the readings already had: offsets are not added together. Note that readings will continue to arrive out of sync until the device is synchronised.
  • I want to change the reading's enabled/disabled status: enables or disables the readings of the selected range with the Enabled switch. Disabled readings will still be in Copernico but will not be used to calculate times. You can enable them again later.
  • I want to change the readings' physical location.: changes the location of the readings in the selected range, chosen from the list of race locations. It is used to fix the physical location of a device, e.g. the device that should be in the 5K is in the 15K. This action changes the location of the readings already recorded.

You can also delete the readings of the selected rows with the REMOVE button in the top bar. Copernico asks for confirmation (Remove raws) because this cannot be undone: the readings are deleted from Copernico and, if you delete a range, you will not be able to recover it unless you rewind the device.

ℹ️ Note: Copernico recalculates the times of the events with modified or deleted readings when you leave the Raws page, not when you click Apply.

3. A participant's readings

To view a participant's readings, go to Participants in the main menu, select the participant, right-click and choose Raw in the context menu (it only appears with one participant selected). For each participant you can see all the readings generated at each location, check which reading has been assigned to each timing point and modify its time if necessary. You can also enable or disable individual readings for each participant.

The page shows a tab per event with:

  • On the left, the Readings list: all the participant's readings during the race, with the columns Tag, Created, Time, Device, Location, Timing point and Actions. Readings assigned to a timing point have a colour bar, in the same colour as that timing point in the table on the right. The Actions column has a button to disable each reading. You can filter them with the FILTERS button, show the invalid ones (Show invalid) and enable or disable readings one by one, or all the visible ones at once (Disable visible).
  • On the right, the table of times per timing point (it has no title), with the columns Timing point, Gun time, Chiptime, Time of day, Average and Video replay: the time of the reading assigned to each timing point of the race. From here you can modify the time (see Editing times).
