Types of timing points

Timing points refer to each of the times taken from an athlete during a race. The number of timing points may or may not coincide with the number of locations.

Each timing point's type is set in the Type field and can be Start, Finish, Standard or Call room. Combining these types lets you set up any race.

All events must have at least 2 timing points: one of type start and one of type finish.

There is no limit to the number of timing points you can create.

Distinct characteristics of each type of timing point are the following:

Start

  • There must always be a start point, even if it has no location. For example, a flying start. Only one point of this type can exist in each event.
  • By default, it uses the last recorded reading.
  • In Copernico, it is always the first timing point in the setup table.
  • If you have readings at the start, it allows net time to be calculated in an event.

Finish

  • There must always be a finish point in an event. Only one point of this type can exist in each event.
  • By default, it uses the first recorded reading.
  • In Copernico, it is always the last timing point in the setup table.

Standard

  • By default, it uses the first recorded reading.
  • It is the only type where you enter the distance of the timing point (required).

Call room

  • Allows the display of times prior to the start.
  • By default, it uses the first recorded reading.
  • In participants, this point will not appear in the list of viewed locations.
  • You will be able to see the time before starting that event.
  • When a reading is received at this point, the participant's status will change to running.
  • It cannot be used as the start or end point of a split.

Call room points are normally used when you need to record the participants who are going to start the race prior to the starting gun. For example, in a triathlon where you need to know exactly how many participants are going to jump into the water.

ℹ️ Note: you can change which reading a timing point uses with the detection mode in its Advanced editor (pencil icon of the timing point): default (by type), first reading or last reading. See Advanced options in timing points.

Backup lines

In addition, you can add one or more backup lines to any timing point. They are not a type of timing point: they are set up inside the point.

This option allows you to differentiate a second line of antennas that provides a reading to the main point, adjusting the passing time, if there is no reading on the first line.

To add a backup line, click the pencil icon of the timing point to open its Advanced editor and use the Backups section. See Setting up backups.
