Rankings Settings — Help Guide

Rankings configuration in Copérnico lets you control which results are published for each event of your race: from simple overall rankings to advanced configurations with filters, groupings and custom media.

You can work quickly using the Auto mode or take full control with the Custom mode. You can also reuse configurations through templates and give your rankings a professional look with media configuration.

💡 Note: Rankings are configured per race and per event inside the Timer Panel. Each event can have its own ranking configuration, even within the same race.

1. Getting started

Rankings are configured from the Timer Panel, in the Rankings section of each race. Each event in the race can have its own ranking configuration.

  • Each event defines which rankings are published and how they are calculated.
  • There are two working modes: Auto (recommended) and Custom.
  • Before publishing you can open a preview of the ranking definitions.

To access the configuration:

  1. Open your race in the Timer Panel.
  2. Select the event you want to configure.
  3. Go to the Rankings section.

💡 Tip: If this is the first time you configure rankings for this race, start with Auto Mode. You can always switch to Custom Mode later if you need special configurations.

2. Auto Mode

Auto Mode is the fastest and simplest way to generate rankings. It is the default mode for all new events.

  • Rankings are automatically generated from the event setup (segments, intervals, disciplines).
  • For most standard races, no manual configuration is required.
  • It works with single-segment races, multi-segment events and relays.

2.1 Smart defaults in Auto Mode

Auto Mode applies smart defaults to save you time:

  • Participant size is automatically inferred from the event name. For example, if your event is called 4x100m Relay, the system detects it as a relay and adjusts the participant size accordingly.
  • Time type is inferred from your net time configuration.

Even when using Auto Mode, you can still adjust these basic values:

  • Change the participant size (individual, relay, etc.).
  • Adjust the time type used in the rankings.

💡 When to use Auto Mode: Use Auto Mode for most events: standard races, relays and multi-segment events where you do not need special grouping or filtering rules.

3. Custom Mode

When you need full control over how rankings are generated, switch to Custom Mode.

  • Manually define ranking families (for example, overall, by category, by discipline).
  • Configure groupings (gender, age group, club, etc.).
  • Apply specific filters (only finishers, only one discipline, etc.).
  • Customize ordering rules (by time, by position, by points, etc.).

3.1 Segment sets by type

In custom configuration, when selecting which segments to include in a ranking, you can choose them:

  • By segment name (for example: “10K Finish”).
  • By segment type (for example: finish, intermediate, start).

Using segments by type provides two key advantages:

  • If you rename a segment, your ranking configuration will still work.
  • Templates become more portable between races that share the same logical structure (start, intermediate, finish), even if segment names differ.

⚠️ Important: Rankings configured in Custom Mode do not update automatically if you change the event structure (add or remove segments, rename disciplines, etc.). You must review and update the configuration manually when you modify the race.

3.2 When to use Custom Mode

Custom Mode is ideal when:

  • You need specific groupings that Auto Mode does not create by default.
  • You must apply non-standard filters (for example, only participants from a given country or a combined category).
  • You require advanced ordering criteria (for example, rankings by points, by segment, or custom priorities).

4. Templates

Templates allow you to reuse ranking configurations across different events and races, saving a significant amount of time.

  • Any configuration created in Custom Mode can be saved as a template.
  • You can later apply that template to other events with a single click.
  • Templates can be shared between races, so a configuration created for one edition can be reused in future editions.

💡 Tip: If you organise recurring events (for example, a league, a monthly trail series or an annual circuit), create a template once and apply it for each new edition.

5. Ranking definition preview

Before publishing rankings, Copérnico provides a preview showing exactly what will be generated.

  • Click the eye icon (👁) next to an event to open its ranking preview.
  • The preview displays:
    • Ranking families.
    • Disciplines included.
    • Segments used for calculation.
    • Groupings (gender, category, etc.).
    • Filters applied.
    • Ordering rules configured.

💡 Tip: Preview is especially useful for complex setups or when working in Custom Mode. It lets you catch configuration issues before publishing.

6. Media configuration

Media configuration lets you give your rankings pages a professional look by adding:

  • Header backgrounds (images or videos).
  • Embedded videos via URL (for example, YouTube or Vimeo).
  • Sponsor banners in different positions.

6.1 Global vs. per-event configuration

  • The global configuration applies to all events in the race by default and defines a common look and feel.
  • Per-event customisation allows an individual event to override global media configuration (for example, a specific header or sponsor set).

If nothing is configured at event level, the event always inherits the global configuration.

6.2 Header background

For the rankings header background you can choose between three source types:

Source type Description
Embedded URL A YouTube or Vimeo URL, displayed as an embedded player.
Image Upload an image or select one from the gallery.
Video file Upload a video file directly (stored on Copérnico servers).

You can also adjust:

  • Height: set a fixed height in pixels or leave it as auto so the content determines the height.
  • Display mode:
    • Overlay: event information (name, date, stats) is displayed on top of the header background.
    • Stacked: the media content is shown in full, with event information displayed below it.

💡 Suggestion: If you have a race highlight video, you can use it as an embedded URL in the header to create a more engaging experience for participants.

6.3 Sponsors

You can add sponsor banners to the rankings pages. For each sponsor you define:

  • A banner image.
  • A link URL (sponsor website or campaign).
  • The position where it will appear.
Position Where it appears
Top Above the results table.
Bottom Below the results table.
Participant In the individual athlete detail pages.
All Shown everywhere (top, bottom and participant views).

💡 Design tip: Sponsor images look best when they share a consistent height (for example, between 60 and 80 px), for a clean and professional layout.

7. Publishing

Once you have finished configuring rankings and media:

  1. Click Save to store your configuration.
  2. Copérnico automatically generates and publishes the rankings in the background.
  3. The published data includes:
    • Ranking tables for the event.
    • The participant search index.
    • Event statistics.
    • The applied media configuration (headers, sponsors).

You do not need to wait for the process to finish. You can keep working on the race while the rankings are being generated.

8. Tips and best practices

  • Start with Auto Mode and only switch to Custom Mode when you need very specific configurations that Auto cannot cover.
  • Always use the preview before publishing, especially when you have configured rankings in Custom Mode.
  • Set a global media configuration to give your race a consistent brand; use per-event customisation only when necessary.
  • Pay attention to sponsor banner design: keep a similar height (60–80 px) for a professional result.
  • Save your configurations as templates and reuse them for future races or editions to avoid repeating the same work.
